Coffee blossom

Our coffee estate was completely filled with exotic aroma, as the coffee flowers blossom. Ever soothing essence of bloomed flowers gave a grand welcome.

Thus, we decided to take a walk amidst the estate.

It is that time of early spring where the cold is retracting. It is a relaxing time for coffee estate work, as the first showers of the year on coffee creates magical moments. It’s a coffee blossom.

After coffee picking when the coffee plantation receives 1.5 to 2 inches of rain, the coffee bud blooms. After couple of days coffee flowers blossom. Most of coffee in Western Ghats blossoms at the same time. It looks like someone has showered crores of cotton bunches on coffee plants.

Whole estate looks mesmerizing where you have a top tree canopy shredding brown leaves and the pitch green coffee leaves in the lower canopy and white Jasmin like flowers poured over the coffee plants.

Once we start entering estate region, the exotic aroma of coffee flowers which resembles a strong version of Jasmine essence mesmerizes us. Magical world will be created where we can witness the waggle dance of bees, numerous birds and insects, from one bunch to another helping in pollination. It feels like we are in a fairy tale world and we are the lucky ones to experience this awesome feeling.

However, this is a crucial time for coffee industry which decides the coffee harvest of entire year. Coffee harvest is completely dependent on this phenomenon. Coffee blossom happens after first rain and it requires 2 inches of rainfall and a backing rain for support.  Once there is optimal rain and temperature, the flower nourishes to coffee beans. If the crop fails to blossom due to lack of rain, upcoming year’s coffee crop will fail.

Finally, when you stand on a mountain and watch the blossomed coffee, specifically in the terrain of Western Ghats of India, we can experience the snowfall over coffee canopy. This experience is worth all the effort we put in.
